Dolphin Heys in contra dances

I was at the English Country Dance in Brattleboro before the Dawn Dance, and Nikki Herbst called a dance with a dolphin hey; and it was such fun I decided to write contra dances with it (when I was lying awake in bed, and should have been resting before calling the 3 -7 am shift, but whatever).

For those of you (like me) not familiar with a dolphin hey, it’s 4 people doing a hey for 3; with the 1s acting as a unit and trading leads (like a school of fish) when the reach either end and loop back in. For instance, at 1:32 in this lovely video of Sapphire Sea:

If you’re more the diagram/notation sort, for a dolphin hey with the 1s starting between the 2s, and passing lady two first:

Original configuration:
l2 M1 L1 m2
1s pass lady 2 left
M1 L1 l2 m2lady 2 passes her partner right while 1s loop to face back in, lady 1 now in front of man 1
M1 L1 m2 l2
1s pass m2 by left while l2 loops to face back in
m2 M1 L1 l2
1s pass l2 by right, while m2 loops to face back in
m2 l2 M1 L1
l2 passes m2 by left, while 1s loop to face back in, M1 now in front of L1
l2 m2 M1 L1
m2 passes 1s by right, while l2 loops to face back in
l2 M1 L1 m2

With that in mind, here are some riffs on Dolphin Heys in contra. A whole hey for 3 is only ~12 counts; so I’ve played with having 7 or 10 changes instead of 6 so the 1s go from the middle to an edge. That means the dolphin hey either bleeds a little into the next phrase, or they get there ~2 beats early (unless they dancers loop wide). The ones with Kinematic Vorticity in the title steal A1 and B2 from Carol Ormand’s dance Kinematic Vorticity. They’re in reverse composition order, with the newest on top (written after running a few of them with real dancers).
